When you think about working out, what comes to mind? Toning your arms, strengthening your legs, or maybe improving your core? But what about your face? Just like the rest of your body, your face has muscles too—over 40 of them—and they deserve a little attention. That’s where face yoga comes in.
Face yoga is a natural, non-invasive practice that combines facial exercises, massage, and mindfulness to tone, tighten, and lift the skin while improving overall facial health. Think of it as a workout for your face, helping to keep wrinkles at bay and promoting a youthful, glowing complexion. Best of all? It doesn’t require expensive treatments, needles or complicated equipment
Why Face Yoga Works
The muscles in our face can weaken over time, leading to sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Face yoga targets these muscles through specific exercises, improving blood circulation, boosting collagen and elastin production, and giving your skin a natural lift. Our muscles are attached to our skin, so inevitably, if you exercise your muscles, your skin will follow.
Another reason face yoga is effective is that it helps release tension. Many of us hold stress in our face without realizing it—clenching our jaw, furrowing our brows, or tensing our neck. Over time, this tension can contribute to wrinkles and discomfort. Regular face yoga practice encourages relaxation, reducing strain and promoting a more youthful, refreshed appearance.
When paired with a good skincare routine, like using a face oil or moisturizer during your practice, you’ll see even better results. Why? Because the oil helps your hands glide smoothly across your skin, preventing tugging and providing hydration or moisture at the same time - depending on what you use. Hydrated skin appears plumper and healthier, enhancing the effects of your facial exercises.
The Benefits of Face Yoga
Face yoga offers a range of benefits beyond just being a facial exercise. Some of the key advantages include:
Improved Circulation: Facial exercises stimulate blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the skin, giving you a natural glow. It also promotes collagen and elastin production which is crucial for our skin being plump. These are our face`s plumping agents.
Defined Facial Contours: Strengthening the muscles in your face can help define your jawline and cheeks, creating a more sculpted look.
Reduced Puffiness: Lymphatic drainage techniques in face yoga help remove excess fluid, reducing puffiness and under-eye bags, therefore lymphatic drainage is a key part of face yoga.
Less Tension and Stress: Relaxing facial muscles can help alleviate headaches, jaw tension, and even signs of stress on your face.
A More Lifted Appearance: Regular practice can result in firmer, tighter and brighter skin, helping to counteract the natural effects of aging.
How to Get Started
Getting started with face yoga is easier than you think. Whether you’re looking to reduce wrinkles, define your jawline, or simply give your skin a natural boost, incorporating face yoga into your daily routine can make a noticeable difference. In fact, you don’t need any special equipment—just clean hands and a few minutes each day. Try incorporating a few basic exercises into your morning or nighttime routine.
Consistency is key. Even just a few minutes a day can make a difference over time. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel, and soon it will become an enjoyable part of your self-care routine.
My favourite is my traffic jam face yoga. Here are some examples you can try straight away
- Downturn mouth with a twist: lift cheeks and strengthen smile line muscles. You can use a pen/pencil but it can be done without it, too. Wrap your teeth around with your mouth and smile. Hold it for 20 seconds or pulse for 20 seconds, rest and repeat 2x.

- Forehead smoother: Place your fingers gently on your forehead and glide them outward, smoothing any tension while preventing deep lines. Do it for up to 1 minute.

- De-puffing your eyes: using your index fingers, gently swipe under your eyes towards your hairline and down your neck. Make sure your skin is well moisturised to avoid tugging this delicate area. It will help with lymphatic drainage, so the last step is crucial; that`s how you can get rid of toxins as well as your swelling in the eye area. Repeat this exercise for up to 1 minute
